Family History Books.
Who are you? Who are “your people?”
What is your tribe?
People have been asking these questions since time began. They have been valuing the answers as well, embedding the story in their names Anderson [son of Ander] O’Donnel (one of the Donnel clan) etc. and in the family histories passed down from one generation to the next.
Today we find that our stories are being lost as families grow and change and no longer live in the same or nearby towns and villages. In the global village that we have become, a written history of people and times remembered has become increasingly valuable to families. Publishing your family history is one way to create a lasting record of the people who have come before you for the people who will come after.
Histories need not be strictly constructed genealogies. They can be anything you wish the future generations to know. Books of family interviews, recipes, photos, mementos, or some combination of all of these, are as valuable as the well-researched formal genealogy.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR AUTHORS OF FAMILY HISTORIES:
–Start your book with a disclaimer that indicates that the information contained has been collected to the best of your knowledge and my contain factual or spelling errors that you sincerely regret. You might also request that any corrections be sent to you (provide an address) for use in any future editions that may be produced.
–After you have collected your research, and created your rough draft, make a few decisions about the size and format of your book, the number of editions you might want to print and get an idea of the probable cost. Your Mira Publishing Consultant can help you with this. You can save time and money by working with realistic guidelines before you are too far into the project.
–It will be very helpful and cost effective if you set the margins for your manuscript to the appropriate size for the finished book. A manuscript created at 8.5 x 11″ intended for a 5.5 x 8.5″ book may have considerable reflow of text when the book is formatted for printing.
